Landscape paintings

Below is a selection of my landscapes. I love to work plein air where it is a race to capture the moment but equally, I often work from my studio using sketches and studies as reference. I love travel in our campervan to explore new areas and countries, to see new inspiring views and to visit galleries to study the work of other artists. I have worked in a variety of styles - whatever felt right for the scene, mood, time of day and most of all how it made me feel.

The landscape is a recurring theme in my work, so much so that it has become a series in its own right. This is not surprising, as I spend so much of my time sketching, fishing and walking out in the fens. I like capture the wide openness but also the intimate scenes that people often overlook.

Much of my recent work is about conveying a personal feeling and understanding of the landscape but also to capture fleeting moments as the sky and colours change. Also, I am fascinated by the fenland skies that change so dramatically, one minute the scene can be misty silver - the next silhouetted against a golden sky.

Grantchester Meadows, Winter Reflections

I regularly walk and sketch along Grantchester Meadows and then either continue on to Byron's Pool or head to pub for a refreshing beer. However, on this occasion, I was struck by the reflections of the pollarded willows that lined the river cam and lingered longer in the in the cold to capture the scene.
